The prosecutor's office on Friday appealed the acquittal of three photographers who had been accused of invasion of privacy for taking pictures at the scene of the crash that killed Princess Diana. Diana's boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, also was killed in the 1997 crash in Paris. His father, Mohammed al Fayed, already has lodged an appeal.

The three men, whose photos were confiscated, were among photographers who pursued the car carrying Diana and Fayed on Aug. 31, 1997, and took photos after it slammed into the pillar inside a traffic tunnel. The photographers, Jacques Langevin, Christian Martinez, and Fabrice Chassery, were acquitted Nov. 28 of invading the privacy of Dodi Fayed.

In acquitting the three photographers, the court brushed aside the notion that the inside of a car is a private space. It said such an argument does not take into account "the case of a person in a vehicle on a public road who can be seen by passers-by and motorists." The court also said the couple knew they would be photographed when leaving the Ritz Hotel.
